Dr. David Bell, DDS, MD

I was referred to Dr. Bell by my periodontist. My periodontist did not trust his patients with any other surgeon for jaw surgery except Dr. Bell. Dr. Bell is kind, meticulous, and extremely knowledgeable in his specialty. He has been doing jaw surgeries for 20+ years. He previously worked for Kaiser but now has his own practice in Newport Beach. More than half of Dr. Bell’s cases are patients who come to him for a revision due to a previous jaw surgery gone wrong. I consulted with Dr. Bell and he individualized my surgical plan, revising it over several months until it was the best fit for me. Safety is always Dr. Bells #1 concern for his patients. After my surgery, Dr. Bell followed up with me like a hawk, making sure my healing was on track. I was amazed I had zero black, blue, or maroon bruising from the surgery. Having jaw surgery by Dr. Bell has changed my life. I had sleep obstructive apnea for 30+ years due to a recessed lower jaw and small airway. One of the… first things I noticed immediately when I woke up was how much air came through my airway when I inhaled. For the first time in my life, I don’t snore anymore. I sleep through the night without being interrupted by sleep apnea. I’m finally getting the sleep my body needs to recover. I no longer have to take daytime naps because I now feel well-rested when I wake up. I am coming up on 9 weeks post-op, and things are on track thus far. I am confident that recovery will continue to go well under Dr. Bell’s care. I had the pleasure of being under Dr.Bell's care for my surgery first, 5 piece mandibular osteotomy. After being gaslit by other medical professionals about my deterioriating mental faculties and physical ailments, I found Dr.Bell's email purely by happenstance, and wrote what basically was a cry for help. You see, I was suffering from numerous mental and physical issues that my general practitioner ignored or referred me to psychiatrists to numb me with SSRI's or band aid fix with ADHD medications. I was suffering for almost a decade from debilitating brain fog, worsening ADHD, daytime fatigue, speech issues, chronic hives, GERD, IBS, back/neck pain. None of the countless dozens of doctors knew what was going on or even had the foresight that it might stem from a skelatal deformity that was causing extreme stress on my body and decades of sleep apnea. I sent this amazing doctor a long winded email on Thanksgiving day and he replied almost within an hour saying that all my issues can… be explained scientifically and its not all in my head. This was the first time in a long time that a medically trained professional actually took the time to listen to all my problems and provide his educated guess as to why I've been experiencing such debilitating health issues without being ignored or treated like I have Munchausen syndrome. Dr.Bell takes time out of his busy day to connect to each and one of his patients no matter if its the weekend or a major holiday. Mind you I just randomly emailed this surgeon, and he replied back reaffirming my long winded email on a major holiday. When I first met him face to face for a preliminary consultation, I immediately knew that he was different than other surgeons. He places a very big emphasis on compassion and human connection. His very motto is to build a firm and steadfast rapport with each and every one of his patients before even considering scheduling the surgery. He listened to all of my questions, gave me insights and reasons why it was due to my recessed jaw, and even gave me genuine and earnest life advice. He made sure that I knew what the jaw surgery entails, the complications, the recovery process, and why having the surgery done may improve or outright fix some or most of my health issues through xrays that was taken. I'm generally a reserved person with a pessimistic view on modern medicine where its reactive vs proactive, and Dr.Bell earned my complete trust. He is brilliant at what he does, and is a modern day mozart in the maxillofacial surgical field. I had my surgery late January, and there were 0 complications. My swelling has subsided dramatically week 2 and I had relatively little pain. Its a bit premature to see the positve health impacts of having DJS, but my brain fog has disappeared, I have more restfull sleep, I no longer have daytime fatigue, I don't need to take antihistamines for my chronic hives, my GERD and IBS is gone, and I no longer gasp for breath at night. This surgery has single handedly changed my life for the better and I dont think any other surgeon could have done the type of surgery that was done besides Dr.Bell. This is a major surgery. It can be frightening, but know that you are in good hands. I couldn't be happier and Dr.Bell has defined a new golden standard.

My experience with Dr. Bell was nothing short of amazing. Once I met him, I could tell he was the perfect fit. His attention to detail is unparalleled compared to other surgeons I spoke to. Not only was he attentive at all times and ready to answer any questions, but he was also present after surgery and even called to check on how I was doing. He is truly dedicated to achieving the best results for you, and you can expect him to be 100% honest with you.

Dr. Bell is the best Maxillofacial surgeon in the southern California area. I had my surgery with him back in 2019 and it went about as well as it could go. I did have some complications years after such as two of my teeth dying due to the surgery, but that is a somewhat common occurrence because other people have the same problem after undergoing jaw surgery. He provides great detail in what he will do and answers any questions you may have. He's also strict when it comes to following instructions of post op care, but it is for your benefit. So if you can manage to book an appointment with him (he has long wait time due to high demand) he will do a great job in your jaw surgery journey.

Dr. Bell is probably hands down the worlds best surgeon. As a physician, I had to do my due diligence when it comes down to choosing a surgeon for my loved ones and family members Dr. Bell, is one of the very few surgeons not only in the United States also in the who specializes only in Orthognathic surgery. The results speak for them selves. When it comes down to a major procedure, a very few surgeons in the world can do I will not choose anyone else.

I was very lucky to have Dr. David Louis Bell in my network area. I was searching for months for a solution to the problems I was having and came upon his stellar reviews. I suffered from a skeletal malformation of the jaws (class II overbite) and had experienced insufficient orthodontic treatment in my youth. Dr. Bell is truly a one of a kind doctor who not only excels in his work, but truly cares for his patients. He is straight to the point and very thorough on giving instructions for before surgery and after surgery care, which goes to show his experience and professionalism. From my own experience, I had a double jaw surgery that fixed my under-bite due to cleft lip and cleft palette. Despite some minor complications, Dr. Bell's keen eye and skills resolved the problem carefully and efficiently, leaving me with great results and a confident smile.

I started noticing discrepancies with my jaw and chin in elementary school and ever since had been trying to fix things. I went through two very long rounds of braces (I daresay over the course of my life I've been in braces more than I've been out of them), developed a rather painful case of TMJ in high school and was told by my doctor that I should just learn to live with it, and spent a fair amount of money on fillers in college to try and gauge the effect implants might have on my appearance--after nearly two decades of endlessly hitting walls Dr. Bell miraculously solved my problems in about six hours. And spent another couple hours to make sure everything was just right--he cares about his patients and what he does and it really shows in his character, he's precise and meticulous and detailed and artistic, which are, without a doubt, amazing qualities you want in any surgeon (especially ones dealing with your face). When I first met Dr. Bell I'd never heard of orthognathic… surgery before, but he was very clear and concise about what this sort of surgery entails which made it much less daunting than it initially seemed, and it's clear by his conduct that he's highly experienced and knows exactly what he's doing--it's really just a regular Tuesday for him. What was most striking to me, though, was that he asked what I wanted out of the surgery. Quite often I find that doctors tend to tell me what's wrong and what they're going to do about it without much consideration for my personal concerns or opinions, but Dr. Bell made a point to listen to what I thought and offered options of what we could do to solve my jaw issues depending on what I was comfortable with and what my idea of an ideal result would be. The surgery itself was also surprising to me--in all honesty it wasn't a bad experience; my stay in the hospital was almost spa-like, and all the swelling in my face did absolute wonders for my skin, but most surprising of all was how painless the overall experience was. Of course I was taking pain medication, and there were some bouts of pain the first week after surgery, but I was told I was experiencing a bit more pain than average, and it was nothing my prescriptions couldn't easily handle. After the first week all that pain essentially just disappeared; a bit anticlimactic really but personally I'm rather glad for that. However the difference between my jaw before surgery and my jaw now is rather dramatic--I honestly could not be happier with the result, as well as my experience with Dr. Bell and this surgery as a whole.
