I was unfortunate to have hip dysplasia but fortunate to have Dr. Vail perform left and right hip replacements. I never think about my left replacement and look forward to the same position when my right hip fully heals. To be a former professional dancer and unable to function doing the slightest bit of exercise was incredibly discouraging. Dr. Vail came highly recommended by his colleagues and former patients. It's like winning the hip lottery from severe pain and lack of movement to not worrying about getting back on track as a former athlete. I'm sad he is retiring his surgical scalpel but thrilled to learn that he will continue to teach and pass on his knowledge and talents. Kathryn

Dr Vail did a beautiful job fixing my hip which many other top surgeons in the usa were hesitant to touch. I had one of the worst degenerative hips any surgeon at other top institutions had ever seen. Dr Vail instilled so much ease, knowledge and confidence in me - I am walking 8-10 miles every day and doing everything else I had long since forgotten about ever doing again. Miraculous rebirth.

Dr. Vail Is an excellent surgeon and very compassionate person. I feel that my entire care experience has been top rated. In other words I feel I have received the best care possible during and after my right total hip replacement.

Had a THR with Dr. Vail. This was the first surgery I have ever had for anything and I was very apprehensive about it. The entire team made it less stressful and pretty easy. I was walking without assistance a day later, at the gym walking on the track in a week, and driving within two weeks. Never needed pain medicine besides Tylenol. I have my hip replacement leg able to cross my other leg in two weeks. I was able to leave the hospital the same day. I talked to three other surgeons before i decided on Dr. Vail, he had the answers that none of the others did. I’m like a kid with a new toy bragging about all the stuff I can do that I haven’t been able to do for three years.

Couldn’t be happier with the entire hip replacement experience with Dr Vail. Was told he was “the best” - can now personally say he truly is “the best”!

Dr Vail is an excellent Surgeon & Doctor as he makes the patient feel reassured and well prepared for the prosecutes! Dr cail is very approachable and asks is very exact with his diagnosis, care and follow through ! Dr Vail also has an excellent Team at UCSF Health that are really No 1 in every regard! Dr. Vail did my first knee replacement last year and I was very pleased with the results. This year I had Dr. Vail do my other knee and I am happy to say that after just two weeks, everything is going very well.
